Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 25, 2026
Beta Cell Foundation ("BCF," "we," "us," or "our") is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 84-4054715). This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you visit betacellfoundation.org, learn.betacellfoundation.org, map.betacellfoundation.org, and use our programs, tools, and services.
Information We Collect
On betacellfoundation.org, we do not collect personal information through this website. We do not use cookies or client-side tracking scripts. This site uses Netlify Web Analytics, a server-side analytics service that records aggregate traffic data (such as page views, top pages, and geographic regions) without storing full IP addresses or any personally identifiable information. This data is used solely to understand overall site usage.
Education Hub (learn.betacellfoundation.org)
Our Education Hub allows you to optionally create an account to track your course progress. If you choose to create an account:
• We collect and store your email address — this is the only personal information we collect.
• Your email is used solely for passwordless login (login links) and to associate your course progress with your account.
• We store your course progress (which sections you have completed) so you can pick up where you left off.
• We use a session cookie that is strictly necessary to keep you logged in. This cookie is essential for the authentication service you requested and is not used for tracking, analytics, or advertising. It expires after 30 days. No consent banner is required for this cookie under GDPR, as it is necessary to provide the service.
• We use Cloudflare Turnstile, a bot-detection service, to protect the login form from automated abuse. Turnstile may display a brief verification challenge and process your IP address, browser type, and interaction signals to verify you are a real person. This data is processed by Cloudflare and is not stored by BCF.
• No other cookies are set. No analytics, tracking pixels, or third-party trackers are used on the Education Hub.
• All courses are fully accessible without creating an account. Accounts are only needed to save progress.
Type One Run Member Map (map.betacellfoundation.org)
The Type One Run Member Map lets people with type 1 diabetes optionally add their approximate location to a global community map. The map is publicly viewable without an account. If you choose to add yourself:
• We collect your email address — used solely for passwordless sign-in (so you can later edit or remove your pin) and for BCF administrators to connect you with nearby T1D community members when relevant.
• You provide your city, state/region, and country — never your street address or precise GPS coordinates. Your pin is placed at the city centroid (a generalized point representing the city as a whole), not at your home.
• The public map only shows aggregated counts per city. Individual members and email addresses are never visible to other site visitors.
• Your email address is visible only to BCF administrators on a restricted admin view, used solely to introduce nearby members to each other for community building.
• You can permanently delete your account and remove your pin from the map at any time by signing in and clicking "Delete my account." Deletion is immediate and irreversible.
• We use a session cookie that is strictly necessary to keep you signed in. This cookie is essential for the authentication service you requested and is not used for tracking, analytics, or advertising. No consent banner is required for this cookie under GDPR, as it is necessary to provide the service.
• We use Cloudflare Turnstile on the sign-up form to protect against bots and automated abuse, as described in the Education Hub section above.
• The map uses OpenStreetMap and CARTO for base map tiles. Tile requests are sent to those services as you pan and zoom; no account-level information is transmitted with these requests. The map uses Nominatim (OpenStreetMap's geocoder) to convert the city/state/country you enter into approximate coordinates — only the location text you provided is sent, never your email or any other identifier.
• No other cookies are set. No analytics, tracking pixels, or third-party trackers are used on the map.
Your Data Rights
You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time:
• Education Hub — from the "My Progress" page (deletes email address, course progress, and enrollment records).
• Member Map — from the map after signing in, click "Delete my account" (deletes email address and your map pin / location data).
Deletion is immediate and irreversible. If you need assistance, contact us at info@betacellfoundation.org.
Data Retention
Your account data — on either the Education Hub or the Member Map — is retained only for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, all associated data is permanently and immediately removed from our systems. No backups or copies are retained.
Simulators
The blood sugar simulators run entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you enter — timing, doses, exercise details, or any slider or toggle you adjust — is sent to any server. All calculations happen locally on your device, and nothing is saved when you close the page.
Third-Party Services
Our website and programs use the following third-party services that have their own privacy policies:
• Supabase — The Education Hub and the Member Map both use Supabase for authentication and data storage. Your email address, course progress (Hub), and map location data (Map) are stored on Supabase's infrastructure. See Supabase's Privacy Policy.
• Cloudflare Turnstile — The Education Hub and the Member Map sign-up form use Cloudflare Turnstile to protect against bots and automated abuse. Turnstile may display a brief verification challenge and process your IP address, browser type, and interaction patterns to verify you are a real person. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
• OpenStreetMap & CARTO — The Member Map displays base map tiles from CARTO (built on OpenStreetMap data). When you pan and zoom the map, your browser requests tiles from these services. These requests do not include your email or any account-level identifier. See OpenStreetMap's Privacy Policy and CARTO's Privacy Policy.
• Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) — The Member Map uses Nominatim to convert the city/state/country you enter into approximate coordinates. Only the location text you provided is sent — no email or other identifier.
• Zeffy — We use Zeffy to process donations and newsletter signups. When you interact with a Zeffy form, your information is handled according to Zeffy's Privacy Policy. We do not receive or store your payment details.
• Apple Podcasts — The Type One Run Podcast is available through Apple Podcasts. If you listen through an embedded player or Apple's platform, Apple's privacy policy governs your interaction with their service.
• Facebook — The Type One Run community operates on Facebook. Your participation in Facebook groups is governed by Meta's privacy policy. We do not collect or store data from your Facebook activity.
• SquadLocker — Type One Run merchandise is available through SquadLocker. If you make a purchase, SquadLocker's privacy policy governs the transaction. We do not receive or store your payment information from store purchases.
• Netlify — This site is hosted on Netlify. Netlify may collect limited technical data as part of its hosting infrastructure. Please refer to Netlify's Privacy Policy for details.
Data We Do Not Collect
Beyond the optional email address on the Education Hub and the email address plus approximate city/state/country location on the Member Map, we do not collect, store, or process any personal data — including names, payment information, health data, street addresses, precise GPS coordinates, or browsing behavior. No user data is sold, shared, or provided to any third party for marketing or advertising purposes.
California Privacy Rights (CPRA)
If you are a California resident, the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) provides you with specific rights regarding your personal information. We want to make sure you can exercise these rights easily:
• Right to Know: The personal information we collect is your email address (Education Hub or Member Map) and approximate location — city, state/region, country only (Member Map). We use it solely for authentication, course progress tracking, and community connection within the map.
• Right to Delete: You can delete your account and all associated data at any time — from the "My Progress" page on the Education Hub, or the "Delete my account" button on the Member Map, or by contacting us at info@betacellfoundation.org.
• Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing: We do not sell, share, or disclose your personal information to third parties for monetary or other valuable consideration. There is nothing to opt out of.
• Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your privacy rights.
• Categories of Personal Information Collected: Email address (identifiers) and approximate geographic location at the city/state/country level (geolocation data — Member Map only) — collected only when you voluntarily create an account on the Education Hub or add yourself to the Member Map.
• Categories of Personal Information Sold or Shared: None. We do not sell or share personal information.
Children's Privacy
Our websites are intended for general educational and community use and do not knowingly collect information from children under 13 (or under 16 for California residents under CPRA). If you believe a child has created an account on the Education Hub or added themselves to the Member Map, contact us and we will delete it immediately.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, we will update it here. The current policy will always be available on this page.
